Benefits of Music at Work

Music exists as long as society exists and is known to play a significant role in our history. For some people music is life, so its positive impact on our well-being is  indeed great. It have more advantages than disadvantages in both personal life and at work and is probably even more helpful at work and has a straight connection with productivity level. Researches that were held conducted that it is better to let employers listen to music at the workplace since it can lead to amazing positive changes and boost effectiveness of the work itself. So, listening to music at work:

  • lessens or totally eliminates stress;
  • improves mood of workers;
  • helps to relax;
  • makes work more enjoyable;
  • helps fulfilling minor routine tasks;
  • joyful music gives more energy when at the end of the day it slowly fades away;
  • helps team building;
  • gives topics for the discussion for workers.

And on the contrary, a few disadvantages include:

  • lack of concentration among employees who perform complicated and long tasks;
  • inability to communicate when music is too loud;
  • different of tastes among people who work in the same room.

As it can be seen, there are more advantages than disadvantages of music at the workplace. Though some employers have a different strategy: they also understand its importance, but prefer to make music more personalized so to speak. Instead of playing it out loud, they allow workers to bring their MP3 players or listen to their favorite songs on a computer through headphones. Thus some of the disadvantages are eliminated, but, unfortunately, some of the advantages are too. People can no longer be bounded by music and simply become isolated from other staff.

It is also not recommended to listen to music in headphones at noisy factories. According to the numerous researches, constant louder background sounds can damage one’s hearing abilities. That’s why better forget about music in production industries.

Another interesting point is a type of music that suits the best for offices. Majority of people think that it is either something classical or something positive, but neither of them are right. It is a known fact that classical music helps to relax. But relaxation usually leads to loss of concentration and interest to proceed working further. Neither of those will contribute to rising effectiveness of work. While positive music rises mood and brings joy which can result in a loss of objective thinking. When an employee is ripped off a reality he can not predict possible consequences of his decision making and make mistakes. Also positive music can push a person to taking unnecessary risks which is especially harmful in financial sphere.

So it is a decision for every employer to make personally. It depends on the area of work and relationship among colleagues. The only outcome that must be received is rise of effectiveness at the workplace.
