Musical Director - Roy Curran

Hailing
from the Midlands, Roy Curran is an admired conductor and trumpet
player who started his playing career aged 5 with his local Salvation
Army band .He then moved to Langley Band and the National Youth
Brass Band of Great Britain where he played alongside and worked
with such greats as Eric Ball, Harry Mortimer and Dr Dennis Wright.
In 1960 Roy won a scholarship to Birmingham School of Music before
being appointed to the brass section of the BBC Welsh Symphony
Orchestra in 1961.
In 1963 Roy returned to Birmingham as co-principal trumpet and
principal cornet of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra,
a position held with distinction for 22 years.
During this period Roy took up the baton as MD of the Birmingham
School of Music Band, and was rewarded with 11 years of international
success, both on the concert and contest stage. This led him to
conduct many high profile brass bands, including Faireys, Leyland
and Fodens and in 1985 he resigned his position with the City of
Birmingham Symphony Orchestra to become MD of the Brighouse and
Rastrick Band and to teach at Leeds Music College.
During this period Roy became involved with many fine bands and
ensembles appearing as advisor or guest conductor. After leaving
B&R he became MD of the James Shepherd Versatile Brass and
Chorus Brass, conducting these ensembles both at home and abroad.
Roy then accepted an invitation to become MD of the Wingates band,
gaining much success both on the concert and contest platform,
taking the band to the National Finals and winning the French Open.
In 2005 he relinquished his ties with the Wingates Band and became
resident MD at the DUT Yorkshire Imperial Band, before accepting
an offer as MD of the Bristol East and Kingswood Band in 2007,
culminating in the band being crowned West of England Champions.
He accepted the position of conductor of Hebden Bridge Band in
February 2010.
